Italian painter and illustrator PAOLO CRUCILI lives and works in the little Umbrian village of Colle S. Angelo, where he creates landscape paintings, wildlife drawings and paintings, abstract and contemporary paintings, dog portraits, decorative and design work such as mantle pieces and decorated objects, and other commissions.

He works in oils, acrylics, pencil, pastel, sanguinia, and other mediums. His versatile style is widely recognized and he has exhibited in Rome, Milan, Vienna, Spoleto, Nice, Viareggio, Lecce, Sarzana, Pavia, Laines, and Terni. His paintings and decorative works have sold to private collections worldwide. He has won several awards, among them prizes in competitions in Viareggio, Nice, and Lecce, and we quote here a brief sampling of his reviews:

"In the informal poetry of the painting of Crucili, the identifying element is the emotional situation expressed with lightness and delicate tonalities." The works of Crucili are "...pictorial passages of limpid skies, of forms intuitively rather than concretely expressed, which fit into the entire composition in such a way as to become a synthesis of mental and esthetic projection, composed of intuition, of fear, of memories."

"Paolo's skies, in their placid transparence, don't denote an abscence of emotion or passion; rather they are the expression of a natural capacity to arrive at the heart of things, to know very well the significance of hard realities, anguish, even sometimes violence, and to surpass them with an acceptance which is neither abandon, nor victory: but rather, understanding. Like, as a child, how one learns to surpass one's fear of the dark by simply seeing it, coming even to love it, as an integral part of light. In the same way, these works are neither isolation, evasion, nor a fleeing from the earth; they are rather (as in the subtle, tender landscapes), a cancellation of separation from heaven and earth, as if the one were a part a little bit more concrete and colored than the other, the sky. This becomes other times, a sequence of many little zones of sky coming together to compose just the one, infinite in its own fineness, of the canvas to he who views it. Like when, in his more recent works, certain lines, surely taken from the earth, render evident and very visible an image of blue ever more tender, rarefied, transparent; one that exists without existing: an interiorization of heaven, a definite taking-over as it were, to render it part of oneself. It is probably this quality which is both the cause and effect of being a master of sky."

"Allo stesso modo, non sono isolamento, evasione, fuga dalla terra; sono invece (ecco i primi sottili, tenui paesaggi), l'annullamento di ogni separazione tra cielo e terra, quasi che quest'altro non fosse se non la parte un poco più solida e colorata del cielo. Quello stesso che, altre volte, diventa tanti piccoli campi di cielo a comporne uno solo, infinito pur nella finitezza della tela che lo accoglie. Così come, nei lavori più recenti, alcune linee, sicuramente tratti di terra, rendono evidente e ben visibile una volta celeste sempre più attenuata, rarefatta, incolore, che c'è senza esserci: l'interiorizzazione del cielo, un definitivo appropriarsene, farlo divenire parte di sé. E probabilmente tutto questo è la causa e l'effetto dell'essere padroni del proprio cielo."

"Nella poetica informale della pittura di Crucili", scrive il critio Mino Valeri, "l'elemento identificativo è la situazione emozionale espressa con segni lievi e tonalità delicate." Le opere di Crucili, insomma, sono "...brani pittorici con i suoi cieli limpidi, con le sue forme intuite più che concretamente espresse che si inseriscono nell'intera composizione che sembra così diventare sintesti di un progetto mentale ed estetico, fatto di intuizioni, di paure, di ricordi".

" ...I cieli di Paolo, nella loro placida trasparenza, non denotano assenza o sopore o imbrigliamento di emozioni e passioni; sono piuttosto l'espressione di una naturale capacità di arrivare a vedere il cuore azzurro delle cose conoscendone bene gli aspetti più duri, angosciosi, anche violenti, e superandoli con un'accettazione che non è abbandono, ma neppure vittoria: è consapevolezza. Come, da bambini, si giunge a superare la paura del buio imparando semplicemente a vederlo, pure ad amarlo, come parte integrante della luce."
